When I planned my 6 month backpacking trip through South America the thought of going to Antarctica had never entered my mind. But when in Ecuador and considering the Galapagos Islands I heard of a possible budget alternative to the $10,000 Antarctica cruise. Upon more research I found out that if you go to Ushuaia, Argentina , the southernmost city in the world, during the sailing season to Antarctica, they discount the trips one or two days before. The $10,000 trip can be had for a little over $3000. I was fortunate enough to be able to choose one leaving on December 28, 2010. There were 64 tourists paying full fare and 4 backpackets. We had the same accommodations as the others and also had gourmet food and unlimited wine at lunch and dinner. First, we had to cross the Drake Passage which is 600 miles from Cape Horn to the northernmost tip of Antarctica. It is famous for being one of the roughest seas in the world and I can attest to that. As we neared Antarctica I could not get over the size of the icebergs. We landed twice a day for 4 days in separate locations with the first day being December 31, 2010. We also visited the Argentinian base which have families living there year round including many children. Penguins as far as you can see. - After getting my first passport in 2006 and traveling to climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania my life changed. I began the process of getting rid of all my possessions and traveling the world. Traveling to over 100 countries and all 7 continents, hostels have been my home. This "new life" has taught me what is important and it was NOT accumulating money or possessions. Traveling is the best education. I hope my blog will encourage others to travel. My World Tattoo was a way for me to express my PASSION FOR TRAVEL.
